.: Mercy in the desert
A prayer and a song over the war in Iraq -- ©2003 Tim Smith/SongSmith Ministries

[prayed and sung March 19, 2003 at a prayer meeting at Living Hope Fellowship at the commencement of the war]

We have trusted in Your mercy and Your grace
We have known the gentle touch of Your hand and the warmth of Your smile.
We have sensed Your presence in the loneliest and hardest of days.

And now, Lord, we trust You in the Middle East
- somehow, Your mercy and grace are there.
We don't put our trust in men or machines, bombs or jets.
We don't trust the weather or the desert.
We don't trust men's covenants and promises.
We don't fear the mightiest army or the worst catastrophe,
If You are with us - if You guide us - if You comfort us.

We know You are there.
We know You love the most insignificant child there and call them by name.
And You care for the weak and the innocent,
The mother with child; the teenage soldier;
The oldest man who cannot flee fast enough.

And Lord, You know our hearts are not for vengeance,
We cry mercy over the desert;
We cry mercy over our sons and daughters;
Mercy over their sons and daughters;
Mercy over our President;
Mercy over our enemies;
Mercy over Iraq
Mercy over the desert.
